Imaginary Friends

Learn with me in my atelier in Utrecht
One of the questions I get asked about the most is ‘where do you find your inspiration and how do you know what to paint?’. This workshop is to answer exactly that question, we’ll just make up our own subjects!
In this 2,5 hour painting workshop we’ll discover what imaginary friends are hiding in our subconscious and paint and draw them on paper. I’ll teach you how to warm-up for a drawing session, how to start a work on paper using mixed media materials and continue through the ‘ugly’ phase every painting has.
Note: this is not a realistic portrait painting class. I’ll teach you the basic proportions of a face to use as a guideline, but we’re leaving perfectionism out of the studio. This is a workshop where you’re discovering your own drawing/painting style, whether that nose is in the middle of the face, or sideways ;-)
Beginner friendly
For this workshop you don’t need any drawing or painting experience, although if you do have experience and just want to get that extra push to create something in a creative space you’re of course welcome!

The workshop
My favourite thing to draw and paint, next to faces, are florals. They’re timeless. Flowers were painted by the old master’s in the 18th century and they are on your summer dress. Flowers don’t mind, they’re just there to be beautiful and attract bees.
In this 2,5 hour collage and painting workshop we’ll be making a classical floral still-life with a twist. Using our own painted textures and colourful paper we will play around with composition until we land on the right one. I’ll teach you how to mix bold colours and paint different textures and I’ll explain the basics of making a nice composition.
Note: this is not a realistic floral drawing workshop. We will have some reference images of fowers available, but making a fun collage is the main goal here.

Multi-Day Creative Portrait Painting Course
After giving several workshops on painting 'imaginary friends', I noticed that there is quite a demand for a more in-depth learning experience. After all, 2.5 hours fly by, and even though you can continue working at home, you make the biggest creative strides when doing so under guidance. Hence, this expansion pack!
You don't need to have attended the standalone 'imaginary friends' workshop to participate in this course.

One of the most common dilemmas I hear about being creative is: I want to create, but I don't know what! In response to this, I have created the concept of 'imaginary friends'. Although we all already carry them within us, they can now be pulled from our subconscious and put onto paper.
My imaginary friend is often a younger version of myself, or sometimes a very confident, nothing-stops-her character. What are yours?
The course
In this four-day course, we will bring our 'imaginary friends' to life on paper! There is lots of opportunity for personal attention due to small groups of up to 8 participants, and I will provide personal feedback in every lesson (if want to, of course!).
In week 1, we'll take a closer look at 'the real world' and how a head actually functions in 3D. We'll do a lot of sketching, using my favorite tool: the timer. This ensures that you won't get caught up in perfectionism.
In week 2, you'll receive an introduction to materials, focusing particularly on acrylic paint. We'll use professional-grade paint with high pigments, ensuring you're not limited by lower-quality materials. This week, our focus will be on individual elements of the face, possibly using reference photos.
Week 3 brings together our materials with our imaginary friends! I'll teach you how to build a painting on paper and how to choose an inspiring color palette. There will be plenty of room for personal feedback this week, and you can start brainstorming ideas for your 'final project' next week.
In week 4, we'll dive into your final project! The entire session will be dedicated to your own painting on paper, in whatever format suits you best. Whether it's 9 mini paintings or one large masterpiece! You'll bring all your drawings and paintings so we can see your entire process together. Afterwards, we’ll celebrate and appreciate eachothers work!
By the end of this course, you will have experienced significant creative growth, regardless of your starting level. Meeting weekly for four weeks allows us to get to know each other and enables me to provide much more personalized guidance tailored to your needs. I'm certain you'll be amazed at what you'll learn in such a short time!

We can work on an existing workshop together (e.g., imaginary friends, an alternative portrait painting workshop), or I can create a customized workshop or multi-day course for you. Perhaps you'd like to put the finishing touches on a painting you've been working on? I like having a brief phone call beforehand to tailor everything to your preferences. Through meeting a diverse range of students, I can quickly identify what you truly need. We achieve this through various exercises, and occasionally, maybe even through a reassuring word/pencil. Because often, that drawing isn't as ugly as you think ;-)
Location
Workshops and courses will take place in my own painting studio in the center of Utrecht. You’ll be drawing and painting inbetween my own paintings so creating in a creative space is guaranteed.
Since I like keeping workshops and courses as intimate as possible there’s space for a maximum of 8 people.

Roxy van Bemmel
The workshops and courses are taught by me, Roxy van Bemmel. I have been working as an independent artist for six years, after graduating from ArtEZ in Fashion Design in 2017. The workshops are held in my absolute dream studio, which is big, has high ceilings, and beautifully lit, where I spend almost all my days working on my art ánd my business.
In addition, I have five years of experience as a teacher at various schools, from vocational (MBO) and higher professional education (HBO) institutions to private courses in illustration and fashion. Thanks to the diversity of students I have had the pleasure of meeting, I can quickly get to the heart of what you really need.
I believe in creating a lot and also in making ugly things to progress quickly. If you want to get rid of your perfectionism, you’re at the right address!
Practical information

My studio is at a 20 minute walking distance from Utrecht central or you can reach it by bus from there. There’s a (paid) parking garage next to the building.

Unfortunately not. Since I’m buying materials and expecting a certain amount of people to show up, I don’t offer refunds. If you e-mail me however, I’m of course willing to promote your ticket on my instagram page for resale.

A few days before the workshop starts, you will always receive an email from me with an overview of where to go and my phone number in case anything last minute comes up. It will also say whether you need to bring your own materials, though usually this is not necessary.

Of course, I love beginners! Of course! All workshops (unless otherwise specified) are for all skill levels, even if you've never held a pencil before. I'll guide you through the workshop with various exercises so you can create something beautiful even without experience. Plus, it's all about embracing the work-in-progress :-)

Right now I offer two different workshop themes, that I will probably expand on in the future. There’s no guarantee that a workshop will come back the next month as I like to mix it up. If you really want to follow a specific workshop, you can of course get in touch about a private session.

Sometimes I teach through other organisations that offer cheaper workshops and I’ll promote those via my social media. Considering material and studio costs this is the best price I can offer on my personal workshops. In the future I’d like to offer community tickets if a workshop sells out (I’ve been in your situation!), but not yet for this one.
